Horizon aims at supporting research and innovation: one of the main five objectives of Europe 2020, the European strategy for the 2010-2020 decade. In line with such a strategy, H2020 is contributing to build a society based on knowledge and innovation and oriented to the highest priorities of the European agenda for 2020: smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

Conceived as the driving force for the economic growth and new jobs creation, Horizon 2020 is the main financial instrument dedicated to support the European Research Area – that is to say the creation of a common area where researchers, science and technology knowledge can freely circulate – and also the driving force for the Innovation Union: the core initiative of Europe 2020 aiming at promoting the Europen global competitiveness by fostering the building of partnerships dedicated to innovation, the enhancement of research initiatives and the administrative simplification for funding access.
